WORLD'S FIRST HOME NETWORK PROCESSOR SUPPORTING USB2.0 CONNECTIVITY

CONEXANT HAS LAUNCHED A FAMILY OF NEXT-GENERATION HOME NETWORK PROCESSORS WITH WORLD-FIRST USB2.0 SUPPORT.

The new devices are targeted for applications in wired and wireless LAN/WAN networks.

Conexant's new CX8620x family of network processors supports a wide variety of LAN and WAN applications, including broadband wired and wireless gateways, voice and video media distribution and VPNs. The highly integrated, single-chip CX86201/2 series is the industry's first line of HNPs (home network processors) to include host support for high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity between personal computers and peripheral devices.

Additional LAN access technologies supported include Ethernet, HomePNA, HomePlug, IEEE 802.11a/b/g and Ethernet WAN technologies. The chips also include a 5-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch and optional interfaces for wireless and VoIP applications.

The new family is based on the ARM926EJ-S core, operating at 180 MHz, and is offered in two configurations. The CX86201 with integrated 5-port Ethernet Switch and PCI interface is ideally suited for wired and wireless gateway solutions. The highly integrated CX86202 is equipped with the 5-port switch, PCI, USB2.0 support and a VoIP interface, making it the ideal choice for a wide range of highly integrated home networking applications, including wired and wireless gateways, printer servers, VoIPs and VPNs.

The CX86201 and CX86202 are packaged in a 233-pin and a 292-pin BGA, respectively. All configurations comply with the IEEE 802.3 specification governing the physical media and working characteristics of Ethernet LANs.

An example of an application for the CX8620x series is a wireless home gateway that includes an Ethernet WAN port to connect to a broadband modem, four Ethernet LAN ports, an 802.11a/b/g access point connecting any Wi-Fi compatible device and a home storage device connected through the USB 2.0 port.

The chips are currently sampling, with series production scheduled to commence during mid-Q2 2004.
