AMPIRE TFTs FOR YOUR
APPLICATION, TOO!
Today, a display world without TFTs is
no longer imaginable. The product ranges of Asian manufacturers are often marked by a
focus on mobile telephone applications and their offerings thus include, in particular,
smaller screen diagonal sizes. This is not the case, however, for the Taiwanese
manufacturer AMPIRE Co. Ltd.
With AMPIRE (Taipei, Taiwan), CODICO has a long-standing partner in the linecard who has
been successful on the display market for over 10 years, and who also offers a broad range
of RoHS-conforming displays for the European market. An ISO-certified company, AMPIRE has
several operational pillars to guarantee long-term stability and availability, as well as
independence from the strongly seasonal mobile phone and consumer businesses. Based on
continuous market observation and application analyses in the target areas, the company
offers a broad pallet of products that extend from simple monochrome displays (character
and graphic) through to TFTs measuring greater than 10".

AMPIRE's TFT product portfolio of
course comprises small diagonal screen sizes for mobile handheld devices, with the
controller integrated. However, the focus also extends to TFT displays offering larger
diagonal screen sizes and an extended temperature range for industrial applications. TFTs
starting from approx. 3" do not yet include a TFT controller due to space
considerations. The available interface in the majority of cases consists of an 18/24-bit
RGB. Depending on the specific application requirements and subject to prior
clarification, AMPIRE TFTs are also available with add-on VGA, DVI or analog (composite
video) interfaces upon customer request.
The newest sprout in the AMPIRE display family is a TFT with an active screen diagonal of
5.7" and a resolution of 320x240 pixels (QVGA). Designed for industrial applications,
the display comes with an 18-bit digital interface and uses a 3.3V supply voltage. It
features a contrast ratio of >10:1, even with a viewing angle of 65°, while comparable
displays of the same diagonal size manage only 5:1. At 420 cd/m², brightness lies above
the competition's approx. 350 cd/m² average for this class of TFT.
Currently offered with CCFL backlighting, a version with more economical white LED
backlighting and one with an optional integrated touch panel are already in the works.
Both of these versions are scheduled to enter series production in summer 2006.
