It is true that color displays are increasingly dominating the consumer electronics market. Driven by the now massive use of color displays in products such as camcorders, digicams, mobile telephones and LCD TVs, renowned LCD manufacturers continue to shift their production capacities as they retool their machines for the production of color displays (TFTs).

As a consequence, TFT displays are indeed dropping in price, however monochrome character and graphic displays are becoming harder and harder to come by. Due to RoHS and the increasing demand for color, many manufacturers have completely discontinued their monochrome display lines since retooling monochrome production lines for RoHS-conforming components and soldering processes would require too long a development time to be cost-effective with demand for monochrome solutions dwindling.
This situation has resulted in unacceptably long delivery times, or in manufacturers discontinuing entire monochrome product families on short notice. At the same time, there are still many applications and products that simply don't require color displays, and for which monochrome displays are in fact the most cost-effective option.
