CODICO IMPULSE 01/2006

WANTED!

Are you on the lookout for the absolute fail-safe high performance power supply solution? OFF THE SHELF and matching your application, as well? Sounds like "ice and fire" all at once, you say?

Well, ARTESYN's new RFF series offering 500W to 700W of rated output power is designed as a ready-to-use power supply foundation for use in high-availability equipment under extreme outdoor environmental conditions. The insulated DC/DC modules operate with input sources of either 24V nominal (18-36 VDC) or 48V nominal (36-72 VDC).

Designed according to the standard full-brick format, the converters offer a power density of up to 7.7W/cm³ and an efficiency of 90 - 91% at full load, while delivering exceptionally high output power during continuous operation. RFF series DC converters are intended primarily for generating a regulated intermediate bus voltage of 28 VDC nominal, which can be adjusted between 16.8V and 29.4V via an external trim potentiometer. An additional low-voltage output (7VDC to 10VDC) delivers 20mA for signaling purposes and power control, even when the remotely controlled main output is off.

The new RFF series is based on a single forward-topology design without optocouplers and uses ultra-fast recovery output diodes that enable a fixed switching frequency of 1MHz. This yields an efficiency of up to 91% even with precision load regulation and galvanic insulation included.

The encapsulated construction with aluminum baseplate enables each RFF version to remove heat by conduction. Threaded or blank inserts are available for mounting, as per the customer's preference, and the rated temperature range (of the baseplate) extends from -40°C to +100°C.

A key advantage of the RFF series is that up to 11 of the DC converter modules can be connected in parallel for high-current applications, thus enabling the load current to be shared without the need for additional circuitry. A configurable 28V power source delivering up to 260A can thus be implemented quickly and cost effectively. International safety approvals according to EN60950 VDE and UL/cUL60950, and based on an IECEE CB Scheme test certificate, furthermore support an accelerated compliance cycle and time to market.

The RFF series also comes with extra functionality in support of a flexible circuit design, such as differential remote sensing of the line losses and remote On/Off with a choice of positive or negative logic, as well as an "converter operation good" signal.
All obligatory protective functions for this performance class are included, with input over/undervoltage, output overvoltage, overcurrent limiting with steep sloping constant current characteristics and overtemperature shutdown.

The RFF series of DC/DC converters is designed for use in RF power amplifiers and mobile telecom base stations. Versions with 24VDC nominal are offered for typical application in the supply bus of industrial control systems, thus also making the new ARTESYN series ideal for use in enclosed housings for automation applications.
