ARTESYN: THE NEW
TYPHOON FAMILY
Raising a storm: A DC/DC converter with a max.
above-board height of 7.7mm, the first of several to come from ARTESYN's new TYPHOON
family.
Can these new converter modules really defy all previously known boundaries of physics, or
are they just a technical tempest in a teapot? For now, we do know that they've been given
the name TYPHOON, despite their ability to deliver nearly the same power at a "wind
speed" of 0.5m/s as they do with "gale force" cooling of 1.5m/s.
Without a doubt, the TYPHOON's most prominent features are the incredibly low profile
(also a vastly reduced footprint) and their ability to operate without a heat sink. In
fact, they were specifically designed for applications that use a tight inter-board rack
spacing, which typically include wireline A/D Mux´s/optical switches, high-end servers
and network multi-gigabit routers.
The new DC/DC converters are optionally available in the 7.7mm height, or with higher
stand-offs (8.7mm overall height), which permits the on-board lee and cooling flow
characteristics to be optimized. With a 48V (2:1) input range and a galvanic isolation
rating of 2250VDC, these modules are ideally suited for board power supply applications.
All TYPHOON modules are certified according to EN60950, UL/cUL60950 and VDE (certificate
excerpts available), so they are suitable for universal applications with no peripheral
design considerations, or costs.
TYPHOON products are currently available in two series:
1/8 Brick module with
single output, capable of delivering up to 40A (23 x 58 mm)
1/4 Brick module with a dual output of up to 20A per channel (37 x 58 mm)
THE DUAL OUTPUT 1/4 BRICK TYPHOON:
The initial two versions of this series are immediately available: 48VDC > 3.3V &
1.2V and 48VDC > 3.3V & 1.8V. Additional versions will follow later this year:
48VDC > 3.3V/2.5V and 48VDC > 5V/3.3V.
The two outputs are separate of each other and independently regulated, delivering up to
20A each at an efficiency of 90%.

A channel tracking function ensures
simultaneous monotonic start-up of the two outputs.
This solution permits system developers to replace two 1/4 brick converters with a single
module, thereby reducing converter footprint by 50% and cost by 25%.

THE SINGLE OUTPUT 1/8 BRICK TYPHOON:
The first version of this series is immediately available:48VDC > 1.8V / 40A.
Additional versions will follow later this year: 48VDC > 1.2V, 2.5V and 3.3V. This
solution achieves a power density figure of 180W/in³. System developers can now replace a
1/4 brick converter with a 1/8 brick TYPHOON, to reduce converter footprint by 38% and
cost by 25%.
