SECOND-GENERATION POINT-OF-LOAD CONVERTERS!
ARTESYN has launched a new, second-generation series of point-of-load converters: The 15-ampere mini-converter for SMD mounting.
To complement its offering of low-cost point-of-load converters for computing applications with "standard" environmental and performance requirements (the SIL6C, SIL15C and SIL30C series), ARTESYN is ringing in a new epoch of converters for point-of-load applications, with the launch of its SM15E series.
The new generation of point-of-load converters was designed to meet even the most stringent efficiency and board space requirements. These 15-amp converters deliver a power density of 222W/in.³ on a very compact surface measuring only 13.5 x 33 mm. They are designed for automated (SMD) mounting.
The new converter boards weigh in at 6.3 g. Mounted as a component onto the PCB, they have an above-board height of 8.2mm max. and deliver their rated amperage in ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to +75°C, without forced cooling.

These converter modules can therefore be placed anywhere on the PCB, with essentially no minimum airflow requirement. Generated heat is very low, as the new ARTESYN devices deliver 95% efficiency.
The converters operate with on-board bus voltage levels ranging from 3.0 to 5.5VDC. The fixed output series is available in output versions of 0.8V / 1.0V / 1.2V / 1.5V / 1.8V / 2.0V / 2.5V / 3.3V, adjustable to +/-10%. The 2.5V and 3.3V versions are available now. Within the next few weeks, ARTESYN will also launch a version with an input range of 4.5V - 5.5V and an ultra-wide adjustable output of 0.8V - 3.5V. One external trim resistor can be used to adjust the output level.
For sequencing applications, a remote ON/OFF pin is provided. Remote sensing and the ability to operate without a minimum load requirement make fast design-in times a reality. Versions without these pins are also available, in case second sourcing considerations require them. The SMT15E can be ordered in either reel or tape packaging.
These converters are listed and approved according to the UL/cUL and TÜV EN60950 standards.
