ULTRA-FAST POL CONVERTERS OFFER NEW PERSPECTIVES!

ARTESYN TECHNOLOGY'S NEW SMT-F FAMILY IS AN ULTRA-FAST (300A/µS STEP LOAD CHANGES), HIGH PERFORMING POINT-OF-LOAD DC/DC CONVERTER THAT SHOULD OPEN NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR USING POL CONVERTERS TO IMPROVE YOUR DESIGN.

ARTESYN's newest switching converters offer unbelievable performance and speed: step load changes of 300A/µs at 23W/cm³, and 12A of current on a 14 x 16 mm footprint.

At the heart of ARTESYN's "F class" lies a highly integrated monolithic controller. The series also uses synchronous buck regulator technology and a switching frequency of 600KHz - 700KHz to achieve 95% efficiency (idle current with no load is < 100mA).
As a pleasant side benefit, noise frequency is often higher than the data transmission rate.

Two series are currently available:

SMT12F:
The SMT12F has a wide input range of 3.0V to 5.5V, and an output voltage trim range of 0.9V to 3.3V. It is rated for 12A, has a di/dt of 300A/µs for a full 12-A load step, and achieves recovery to within +/-1% in 15µs. Deviation is 100 mV (3%). A big advantage is the savings in board space when using the customary "tantals." This converter requires just five 22-µF external ceramic capacitors and therefore occupies a mere 300mm² of total board space - up to 20% less than competing solutions (single-component or multi-chip).

  SMT15F:
The SMT15F series delivers 15A over an output range of 0.9V to 1.8V. The DC input voltage range (intermediate bus) is 10.8V to 13.2V, and the converter is rated for 50mV deviation, with a di/dt of 200A/µs and a 7.5-A load step. The recovery time is 10µs to within +/-1%. The SMT15F requires no external capacitors.

The price of US$16.13 per 1000 units is surprisingly low, especially when taking into account the speed and size advantage.

ARTESYN has packed both new converter series with extra functions, such as true monotone startup with no minimum load requirement and remote on/off. Remote sensing and power good signals at the output help maintain optimal voltage at the load. An additional digital input is included for marging up/down, which briefly sets output voltage at +5% or -5% of the selected nominal voltage for testing.

The devices also have comprehensive short circuit protection and self-resetting overtemperature cutoff at a PCB-module temperature hysteresis of (typically) 105°C to 120°C.
Across the operating temperature range (from -40°C to +85°C) power leakage is a low 2 Watts. The devices operate with convection cooling for most of the range, and with 200LFM forced cooling from+ 55°C to +80°C.
