CONEXANT: BLAZING THE TRAIL FOR A NEW TV AGE
CONEXANT Systems, the leading manufacturer of video encoders, decoders, tuners and demodulators, is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a complete set-top-box (STB) solution with DVB-S2 and HDTV. Made up of a 5-piece chipset, the CONEXANT solution comprises the following individual components: CX24118, CX24116, CX2417x, CX2418x and CX20552.
>The CX24118 is a direct down-conversion satellite tuner. The device offers an 8PSK advanced modulation and coding scheme that lets satellite operators increase their data throughput rates by up to 35 percent using existing bandwidth.
>The CX24116 is a DVB-S2 demodulator/decoder. DVB-S2 makes effective use of both existing and new-generation coding and modulation techniques to provide up to a 35% capacity increase over the previous DVB-S standard.
>The CX2417x is an MPEG-2 HDTV decoder. The chip searches the available and received digital TV channels, decoding authorized program content for display on an HDTV monitor.
>The CX2418x is an MPEG-4/H.264 decoder. H.264 offers a higher compression rate than MPEG-2, at the same level of quality. For HDTV, this not only increases the number of channels that a satellite operator can transmit via the transponder, but also provides greater recording capacity on STBs with built-in HDDs.

>The CX20552 is a universal serial bus (USB) 2.0 physical layer (PHY) transceiver: This chip is connected to the CX2417x to enable the STB to operate with numerous external devices, and to increase the capacity of the recording device.
Humax is the first manufacturer to build a set-top box using this CONEXANT chipset, and the Humax STBs are currently being shipped to interested customers by Premiere. In addition, another major STB producer, Amstrad PLC, got on board last month and is now developing and manufacturing STBs based on the same CONEXANT solution.
Together with our partners CONEXANT and AIX-Solve - the latter provides support for these CONEXANT chips - CODICO has been able to offer customers an attractively priced complete package for the development and manufacture of DVB-S2 and HDTV set-top boxes since May of this year.
