MICRF505: SMALLER,
EASIER, BETTER!
MICREL RECENTLY INTRODUCED THE MICRF505T NEXT-GENERATION RADIOWIRE TRANSCEIVER, FEATURING
SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER SIZE, IMPROVED EASE OF USE, AND EVEN BETTER PERFORMANCE THAN ITS
PREDECESSORS.
- Smaller: a tiny 5 x 5mm MLF package
- Easier: More user-friendly design, with few external components required
- Better: high sensitivity and high transmit power
The MICRF505 transceiver operates from 850MHz to 950MHz and supports FSK modulation at
data rates up to 200kbps. Many functions are user programmable, e.g., the frequency
synthesizer, making the MICRF505 ideal for frequency hopping applications.

Reducing the overall size and lowering
the BOM has been the primary objective in the design of this new transceiver. Through high
integration, the number of external components is reduced to a minimum. Packaged in a 5mm
x 5mm MLF, the MICRF505 is designed to accommodate low-cost, low-accuracy crystals. In
support of this functionality, MICREL has added an integrated frequency error estimator to
determine frequency mismatches between the communicating transceiver and the internal
crystal tuner/amplifier, which enables automated crystal tuning. The MICRF505 also
incorporates an internal clock recovery circuit to reduce the burden on its companion
baseband processor, thereby enabling the use of a simpler, and less costly,
microcontroller.
The MICRF505 features high sensitivity, selectivity and transmit power, so RF performance
has not been sacrificed in the process of driving down BOM cost. The integrated
transmit/receive (T/R) switch furthermore eliminates switch losses, for even higher
system-level RF performance.
