FIRST 4-CHANNEL 66MHz PCI 3.0 UART FROM EXAR!
EXAR, a leading manufacturer of high-performance, mixed-signal ICs for the worldwide communications infrastructure, has introduced the world's first 4-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter).
The XR17V254 features a baud rate generator with an integrated divisor, as well as a power management unit for the PCI bus. The device enables a fast upgrade of customer applications, thus ensuring that high-speed solutions on the growing computer and server markets also suit applications such as remote access servers, measurement systems, storage, integrated systems, serial port expansion and process control. Adding to the already market-accepted 8-channel (XR17V258) and 2-channel (XR17V252) 66MHz PCI 3.0 UARTs, the new device not only complements EXAR's product line, but also vastly increases flexibility with respect to the scalability of interface cards.
Product Details
The XR17V254 is a one-chip multi-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART that can be connected to a 3.3V supply. The device integrates a baud rate generator, version 1.1 PCI bus power management, a programmable 16-bit timer/counter and 64-byte FIFOs. The integrated ability to interface with the 66MHz PCI bus makes it ideal for system monitoring and management applications, where redundancy and quality of service at higher speeds are essential.

The XR17V254 consists of four independent UART channels with a global interrupt source register that permits a complete syntax analysis within the device. Each UART channel is equipped with a fully programmable TX and RF FIFO level trigger, FIFO level counter, automatic hardware and software flow control, infrared encoder/decoder (IrDA) and automatic RS-485 half-duplex direction control for hardware and software design simplification. The XR17V254 is also register-set, package and pin compatible with EXAR's existing 33MHz UART chips (XR17C154 and XR17D154).
Availability and Development
ToolsThe XR17V254 is offered in a 100-pin TQFP package and is available in sample quantities. Standard drivers for almost all popular operating systems, such as Windows CE 4.2 and 5.0, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Linux, exist for the entire series of devices.
