The hold-up time of between 20 and 50ms for conventional power supplies simply won't do for you? Then you'll be glad to know that the new DCH20 series, with 20W of output power, delivers full power to the load for at least 4 seconds even at a low line voltage of 100VAC. Under lower loading conditions, the hold-up time increases exponentially to 10s at 10W and 40s at 5W, etc.
The integrated "miracle cure" that makes it all possible is EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor). To manufacture the new DCH20 family, Japan's RUBYCON relies on the masterly know-how of its in-house capacitor works, which results in the superior performance of these power supplies - even with all parameters designed conservatively in the typical Japanese fashion.
Rated for a continuous load of 20W and a worldwide input range of 85VAC to 264VAC, the DCH20 offers outputs of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V, 24V or 48V. The maximum output regulation tolerance taking into account all parameters, such as load and input variations, temperature and age induced drift, is rated at +/-3% max. This precision is made possible by the DC/DC converter placed after the capacitor bank.
As for size, these power supplies measure a very modern 2" (5.5cm) in width, while the length (18cm) and height (4cm) are noticeably a function of the buffer capacitors used. Built-in filtering according to FCC and EN55022 Class B supports the application-specific EMI requirements. Naturally, these open-card modules also carry the required approvals for worldwide use: UL, CSA, EN60950.

Is there a weakness? Yes, even these cards do have a downside: To a certain extent, the EDLC capacitors are temperature sensitive. As a result, the DCH20's specified operating temperature range is 0°C to +60°C, and the manufacturer recommends derating continuous power from +40°C upward (50% at +60°C). Under 0°C, the hold-up time is also noticeably reduced.
