5.7" TFT DISPLAYS NOW AVAILABLE WITH ON-BOARD TFT CONTROLLER!
Be it for entirely new products or migrating existing ones to a color display, AMPIRE's 5.7" TFT family offers a variety of solutions having a controller on board!
In the past, TFT displays with an active 3.5" and larger screen caused designers headaches due to the complex interface, as well as numerous supply and control circuits, that they required. Once a solution was found, there still remained the question of whether all that complexity was worth the bother. Among others, the different supply voltages (due to the completely different data interface as compared to monochrome displays) and the overwhelming number of control circuits needed could not be underestimated. Without even considering the added need of a powerful processor to control the display, such excessive effort and cost forced designers to think twice about attempting to migrate from monochrome to color.
To eliminate these obstacles, AMPIRE Co. Ltd. set about developing a new TFT control concept that is now in series production. The design goal was to create an interface that could also be used to easily control TFT displays > 3.5" - in a fashion very similar to monochrome displays. The cyclical refreshing of pixels (comparable to a DRAM) in particular requires a large CPU capacity and high clock rates, and these two priorities were placed atop AMPIRE's "simplification list."

The result: AMPIRE developed its very own ASIC in-house and integrated it into the TFT backplane electronics to provide the user with a no-fuss interface. The display thus offers the following key connection parameters:

8/9/16/18-bit interface for 8080 or 68000 mode
•
Embedded 18-bit TFT display SRAM with 153,600 pixels max. (HVGA)
•
Embedded Image Shift / Rotate function 3.3V single voltage source
This new ASIC can certainly be called a TFT controller, however it is much more than that! It also performs scanning (the cyclical refreshing of pixels) and, because it is integrated in the TFT, does so without using up precious board space. In addition, as an integral component of the display, the ASIC saves significant cost over using a separate TFT controller.
3.5" and 4.3" TFTs incorporating the new ASIC are planned for this year.
