UART NEWS FROM EXAR.
EXAR, A WORLD LEADER IN UART ICs, HAS ADDED NEW PCI UNIVERSAL UARTs TO THE LINEUP.
These are the industry's first UARTs to automatically detect the logic level at the PCI bus, and they support both 3.3V and 5V busses. The new EXAR product family will bring 2-, 4- and 8-channel versions on the market, designated XR17D152 / 154 and 158 respectively.
The new series conforms to all V2.3 PCI bus signaling specifications for both bus voltages at a full 33 MHz clock speed. This permits a direct interface to the PCI Bus and subsequently eliminates the need for a PCI-Local bus bridge, which reduces system costs. The new Exar ICs are the ideal solution for universal PCI add-in cards and modules.
An automatic configuration routine permits no-fuss plug-and-play installations. The 32-bit data bus can be fully utilized, which enables significantly higher data throughput per interrupt and also saves valuable CPU resources.

The global 32-bit IRQ register offers information via each TX and RX channel, which increases efficiency of the system drivers. Ultimately, that adds up to better overall system performance.
The internal registers are fully compatible with the 16C550 industry standard, and the new devices offer 64 bytes of TX and RX FIFO buffer capacity per channel to support data rates of up to 6.25 Mbps. Another key feature, automatic hardware and Xon/Xoff software flow control, prevents data loss during transmission. The new XR17D15x family also offers programmable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, FIFO level counters, wireless infrared encoder/decoder, device identification and a sleep mode with wake-up indicator.
Each channel also has an automatic RS485 half-duplex direction control output with programmable turn-around delay feature, which greatly simplifies hardware and software development. This feature can compensate for signal propagation delays in installations with long cable runs.
The XR17D152 (2-channel) is available in a 100-pin TQFP package, and the XR17D154 (4-channel) and XR17D158 (8-channel) each come in a 144-pin TQFP package. All three devices are offered in both industrial and commercial temperature ranges. EXAR supplies the software drivers and source code at no extra cost.
