PUSH/PUSH CONNECTORS FOR MINI SD CARDS.

YAMAICHI ELECTRONICS IS ONE OF THE FIRST CONNECTOR MANUFACTURERS TO SUCCESSFULLY DEVELOP A CONNECTOR SYSTEM FOR USE WITH ULTRA-SMALL MINI SD CARDS.

SanDisk, Matsushita and Toshiba developed the MiniSD format as an ultra-small form factor extension of the existing SD (Secure Digital) flash memory card standard (currently available with up to 256MB capacity). The new card targets cellular telephone applications, where high memory density solutions are in strong demand. According to the manufacturers, the MiniSD card occupies a footprint of 430 mm² and a packaged volume of 602 mm³ (weighing a mere 1g). Respectively, that translates to a savings of 40% and 60% in comparison to the standard SD card.

A member of the SD Card Association (www.sdcard.org), Yamaichi Electronics is one of the first connector manufacturers to develop a comfortable contact unit for the MiniSD card, equipped with the easy-to-use push/push mechanism (NMS011-2000-1). Target applications are 2.5G and 3G mobile phones requiring a large memory for features like still pictures, video, MP3, video games, planners, email and voice mail, but also all other applications which require miniaturized components. In an office environment, the robust component delivers true YAMAICHI reliability with approximately 10,000 mating cycles. It is equipped with a card detector as well as a card lock mechanism, and is available on tape and reel (800 pieces per reel) for pick & place SMD assembly.
A separately available adapter for the MiniSD (NMS011-1000) allows conversion into the SD card form factor, which means it can be used in existing SD card slots. The miniSD card mated in the adapter complies with all standard SD card specifications. Consequently, the miniSD is compatible with the whole world of SD card applications: beamers, PDAs, MP3 players, camcorders, etc. If desired, the adapter can also be printed with the customer logo.
The reversed push/push connector (NMS011-2100-1) for PCB bottom mount will be available in the fourth quarter of 2003.
