GSM – NOW SMALLER THAN EVER!

With the new HiLo quadband GSM/GPRS module for industrial machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, SAGEM recently introduced what it reports to be the smallest such module currently available on the market.

A key goal in developing the HiLo was to enable as many applications as possible to connect to GSM/GPRS networks. Whether the M2M system makes do with an 8-bit controller or is equipped with a high-performance CPU and operating system, the option remains the system designer’s. For the HiLo’s design, SAGEM’s focus was on such characteristics as size, power consumption, reliability and temperature range, but equally on lowering the cost of implementing GPRS functionality. Thanks to its many years of experience in the manufacture of mobile telephone solutions, as well as its numerous field-tested GSM/GPRS modules already in use, SAGEM in the end succeeded in packing many exceptional features into the HiLO at an astoundingly affordable price.

Thanks to its ultra-compact dimensions of 27mm x 27mm x 3.6mm, the HiLo module is ideally suited for applications where space is severely limited – especially considering that the 40-pin board-to-board connector and U.FL antenna connector are already factored in. In addition to the U.FL connection, the module integrates 2 pads that support the optional use of spring contacts for connecting the antenna, which saves additional space and costs.

A significant advantage of the HiLo module is its extremely low power consumption: <1.5mA in idle mode, during which it can still receive calls. It also requires a low 3.2V to 4.5V input voltage for operation, meaning it can be supplied by either a Li-Ion or Li-Po accumulator – a key factor for mobile, battery-operated devices.

Particularly within industrial and/or outdoor environments, the standard GSM temperature range of -10°C to +55°C frequently presents problems. The HiLo, on the other hand, features an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. And, to ensure robustness and long life, the module’s components are protected with underfilling. With these precautions for rough environments, the HiLo is also well suited for automotive applications.

SAGEM modules let customers build on the solutions of a globally established, European manufacturer. Thus, you can be assured of highest quality, as the modules are manufactured in SAGEM’s own production facilities in France, and the technology that they are based on has been tried and tested around the globe.

About M2M Modules
M2M (Machine-to-Machine) modules enable machines or mobile devices to communicate with each other via wireless networks, with no human intervention, thus making them “intelligent” machines.
M2M modules today find use in cash register and credit card terminals, vending machines and alarm systems. In addition, the technology supports the maintenance and administration of remote mobile units, such as containers, vehicles and  construction equipment.
