For DC/DC converters used at the point of load, a minimized footprint and efficiency over a wide load range are increasingly important factors to go along with cost. With this in mind, an intelligent IC with a COT design delivers clear-cut advantages! COT controllers utilize the output ripple voltage to control the switching cycle. With the help of a comparator, the feedback signal is compared to a reference value and in this way it is determined whether the MOSFET will be turned on or off. The direct comparison enables an extremely fast response to sudden output load variations and to input voltage changes. In addition, this design concept considerably simplifies the compensation network.
