INTELLON – NEW AT CODICO!

Starting immediately, and in all of our sales territories, CODICO is now also representing INTELLON, a leading provider of HomePlug-compatible ICs for home network, networked entertainment electronics, Ethernet-over-Coax (EOC), Smart Grid and commercial applications!
INTELLON developed and patented the baseline technology for HomePlug 1.0, a key milestone for implementing the baseline technology behind the 200-Mbps PHY-rate HomePlug AV powerline standard and the draft IEEE P1901 power line standard. With more than 30 million HomePlug-based ICs sold, INTELLON is the market-share leader in the HomePlug IC market.
A stock exchange-listed company (Nasdaq: ITLN), INTELLON was established in 1989 and has its headquarters in Orlando, Florida (USA).
The following is an overview of the application areas for HomePlug technology:

Broadband Sharing
INTELLON's HomePlug-based technology allows consumers and service providers to share broadband service throughout a private household or small business over the existing household electrical wiring without the setup problems, coverage gaps, interference, service-hotline calls and product returns so frequently experienced with wireless solutions.
To enable broadband sharing, all a consumer or service provider needs to do is connect a Y-cable (power supply with integrated HomePlug adapter) and a broadband modem/router (the power cord carries both the electric power and the Internet content); or, using an Ethernet cable, connect the modem/router to a HomePlug-compatible Ethernet adapter and plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. With this one simple connection, every electrical outlet in the home or small business becomes an Ethernet port providing full broadband Internet connectivity.

Wireless Extension
Wireless connections tend to break off when a user moves too far from the installed router or cable modem. The problem can be especially significant in private homes where the user's home office and the installation point are located on opposite sides of the house/building. Range limits and interference problems thus make wireless networks unreliable for many mobile consumers, who, as a result, must repeatedly contact their service providers and/or network equipment vendors for technical support.
INTELLON’s HomePlug-based power line technology fills in these gaps in coverage by acting as a convenient “extension cord” for the wireless environment. Customers need only plug a HomePlug-compliant bridge, such as an Ethernet adapter, into their wireless routers to instantly transform every electrical outlet in the home or small business into a virtual Ethernet port. For the next step, a HomePlug-enabled WiFi access point is plugged into the nearest electrical outlet in the area where wireless coverage is desired. The Internet signal now travels over the existing electrical wires to the access point and then through the air via WiFi.

Networked Entertainment
INTELLON HomePlug-compliant ICs are particularly useful in networked entertainment applications that require real-time streaming and high quality of service (QoS).
Because wireless networks often experience coverage and reliability problems, the consistent, high-quality streaming of audio and video content is not always assured. Using power line technology as the backbone, either in addition to or as an alternative to wireless LAN, enables users to reliably move digital content between their PCs and consumer entertainment devices anywhere in their homes. Without installing additional speaker wire or phone lines, users can now enjoy the following entertainment applications throughout their home network:

Audio Streaming Throughout the Home
The active speakers and audio streamers connected with the HomePlug adapter distribute music around the house or apartment without running new electrical cables. Best of all, these embedded speakers instantly become part of the home network as soon as they're plugged in. This means music can be played in any (or every!) room of the house, with no need for custom wiring or expensive speakers. A home theater can thus be set up quickly and without fuss.

Networked Video
Video recorders such as TiVo are gaining in popularity, which also explains why the demand for video transmission to anywhere in the home network is on the rise. Increasingly, users who have recorded video on one device (for example, a TiVo box in the living room) wish to transmit that content to a different television in another part of the house (for example, the new flat-panel TV in the bedroom). INTELLON HomePlug-based technology is designed to handle such video distribution demands without a loss in service quality, no matter where in the network the content is viewed.

Online Games
Connecting an X-box or other game console to the Internet is often difficult when the gamer’s television isn't located directly near a broadband access point. INTELLON’s HomePlug-based power line connectivity enables users to easily distribute broadband service to every electrical outlet in the house. All they need to do is (1) connect a Y-cable (power supply with integrated HomePlug adapter) and broadband modem/router or (2) using an Ethernet cable, connect the broadband modem/router to a HomePlug-compatible Ethernet adapter and plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. Next, the game console is connected via an Ethernet cable to the HomePlug-compliant Ethernet adapter plugged in nearby.

Commercial Applications
INTELLON ICs are designed to communicate over power lines in homes and small businesses, but they are also powerful and flexible enough to operate in many other types of environments and over very diverse power networks.

Commercial HomePlug Applications
By combining their own hard- and software with INTELLON HomePlug-compatible ICs, INTELLON customers have already developed many innovative applications for small businesses, hotels, offices, apartment and public buildings, and even cruise ships. These customers have typically used INTELLON ICs for applications outside of home networks – to mean for specific commercial areas where an Ethernet network is out of the question. While many of these commercial applications also make use of power lines, some utilize coaxial cables or telephone lines (twisted pair lines).
INTELLON HomePlug-compatible ICs also serve broadband applications that use electric power lines (Broadband over Power Line, or BPL) to provide Internet connectivity to private homes and small businesses over the existing electrical infrastructure. Here, too, INTELLON customers have developed specialized hard- and software products for these types of “feeder” (or “last mile”) applications.

Smart Grid
Additional applications and advantages of INTELLON HomePlug powerline technology:

HomePlug powerline enables electric power companies to dynamically manage their electric grids and improve network reliability with the help of remote maintenance. This can be achieved as follows:

* Automated remote reading of electricity meters
* Load monitoring and control
* Power outage detection
* Regulatory initiatives
