Oscillating quartz crystals are tiny wafers (cut from synthesized quartz crystal) which have been metallized and contacted on both sides. They are freely mounted inside an air-tight housing and are held in place only by the terminals. An oscillating crystal performs an oscillation when the frequency of the alternating field matches the crystal's natural frequency. Ultimately, oscillating quartz crystals act like an electric resonant circuit with very low attenuation.
