Many high-speed applications require the bridging of not inconsiderable distances. With MINDSPEED’s new M21030 cable driver and equalizer chip, it is possible to effortlessly bridge 20 meters of copper cabling (24 AWG) at data rates up to 6.5Gbps, even in rough environmental conditions. The M21030 features four fully independent channels, as well as an integrated cross point switch with four inputs and four outputs to extend the potential uses. The adaptive equalizer enables automatically optimized adjustments of the eye diagram to match the cable and connection properties, thus achieving 40dB input equalization and 6dB output signal de-emphasis. The M21030 can be configured via an I2C-compatible interface. By using the auto-configuration function and an external EEPROM, the cable driver can also be operated without an external host processor. To ensure compatibility with PCI-Express and S-ATA/SAS systems, the M21030 is equipped with an electrical idle pass-through function that drives the differential signal to the common mode level during OOB signaling. In addition, the chip’s high-speed inputs and outputs can be boundary scanned via a JTAG port. With a mere 145mW per channel and 580mW total power dissipation at an operating voltage of 1.2V, the cable driver uses extremely little electrical power. The M21030 comes in a tiny 6mm x 6mm QFN package.
