AX88179 -- USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet Controller!

The new ASIX AX88179 is a USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet controller which integrates an USB 3.0 PHY and a 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet MAC/PHY in a single chip. The AX88179 is the latest addition to a new series of USB-to-LAN products from ASIX that are characterized by a small form factor solution and plug-and-play functionality.

The AX88179 can be used in any embedded system with a USB host controller. The integrated USB interface is compatible with all USB specifications (V3.0, V2.0 and V1.1).  The integrated Gigabit Ethernet MAC and PHY is compatible with the familiar IEEE802.3, IEEE802.3u and IEEE802.3ab standards. Only a single 25  MHz quartz crystal is required to drive the component and this supplies both the USB and the Ethernet interface internally.

Other key features of the AX88179 are the IPv4/IPv6 checksum offload engine for reducing the processor load, crossover detection and IEEE802.3az EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet). The EEE defines a mechanism that allows the AX88179 controller to enter a low power idle state to reduce power consumption and consequently to achieve a more energy efficient Ethernet. It also supports properties such as dynamic cable length detection and dynamic power adjustment Green Ethernet in Gigabit mode. Furthermore, it is possible to store the USB device descriptors and node ID in an external EEPROM or in an internal eFuse memory. This data is, of course, loaded automatically. A demo board is available for simple evaluation tasks. The chip is available in a 68-pin QFN 8mm x 8mm RoHS/REACH-compliant package.
