EFFICIENCY OVER THE COMPLETE LOAD RANGE: THE NEW TOPSWITCH-JX FROM POWER INTEGRATIONS

New regulations for AC power supply units require ever greater efficiency over the complete load range as well as in no-load and standby.

This is where the new TOPSwitch-JX comes to the fore with its multimode control architecture. By reducing the average frequency whilst at the same time optimizing the output ripple and preventing audible frequencies, it provides an integrated solution which would otherwise have to be built using a very complicated architecture. The high efficiency in full load mode which can be achieved by this design makes complex, expensive thermal management superfluous.

In standby and no-load, too, the units satisfy the stringent EuP directives without any problems. In fact a design based on the TOPSwitch-JX manages to remain below an input rating of 100 mW even with an input voltage of 264 V whilst at the output a level of over 20 mW remains available for maintaining the system.

In no-load mode the own power consumption of a TOPSwitch-JX power supply unit is around 70 mW. This value remains stable over the temperature range.

The eight modules of the TOPSwitch-JX family cover a power range from 30 W to 240 W and are supplied either in the space-saving low-profile eDIP™ housing which makes it possible to dissipate heat either through the printed circuit board or via a heat sink at the top or in the eSIP(R)-7C housing, the low cost alternative to the TO-220 version for heat sinks mounted on the side.
