MINDSPEED: Optical Physical Media Device (PMD) Chipset for 3G/4G Wireless Base Stations

2010-04-01

MINDSPEED debuts a Optical Physical Media Device (PMD) Chipset for 3G/4G Wireless Base Stations that includes all necessary components required for CPRI-based optical transceivers that economically connect 3G/4G wireless base station servers to one or more remote radio heads (RRHs) over optical fiber. MINDSPEED has collaborated with EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division to  develop a family of transmit and receive optical subassembly solutions based on MINDSPEED's PMD devices. CPRI is an interface description which allows the connection of the base station servers to remote radio heads at high data rates over long-distance fiber links, whereas traditional coax cable only support short distances at such frequencies. This new chipset is a very good complement to the recently announced Transcede multi-core baseband processing SoCs family which is dedicated to the baseband processing of 3G/4G/WiMax Wireless Base Stations.
