MURATA has launched its first non-ceramic based capacitor product: the ECAS series of polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The introduction of a product with polymer aluminum electrolytic technology was made possible by MURATAs purchase of Showa Denko K.K.s (SDK) conductive polymer capacitor business. Polymer capacitors exhibit strong equivalent series resistance (ESR) performance compared to traditional electrolytic capacitors, and they provide characteristics similar to those of multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs).
The ECAS series allows Murata to significantly expand its high-capacitance product offering, thus giving customers a seamless range of capacitor solutions to choose from. Markets for the ECAS series capacitor include the computer, digital A/V and telecom industries, and the new devices suit power management applications in general.
ECAS series capacitors have a resin-molded case structure. They utilize a multilayer aluminum foil for the anode and a solid conductive polymer for the cathode. The capacitors surface-mount design permits them to be soldered using traditional reflow methods. The series is offered in the capacitance range from 6.8uF to 470uF with rated voltages from 2VDC to 16VDC. The case measures 7.3mm x 4.3mm, and three different thicknesses are available.
The series high capacitance values and low ESR ratings ensure low impedance at high frequency (up to 500kHz), thus providing excellent noise suppression, ripple absorption and decoupling abilities on power lines. Another key characteristic is capacitance stability at high operating frequencies and high temperatures. Unlike MLCCs, these capacitors do not exhibit a drop in capacitance when a DC voltage is applied. The operating temperature range is -40°C to +105°C and the entire ECAS series is RoHS compliant.
