MURATA has expanded production capacity for its HICAPS (multilayer ceramic capacitors, or MLCCs, with capacitance values from 1uF to 100uF), as MLCCs are pushing aside tantalum capacitors in ever more applications. Thanks to their excellent noise suppression characteristics at high frequencies, their lower impedance and their delivery-time and price advantage, MLCCs are indeed being used as replacements for tantalum capacitors on an ever larger scale.
Due to the high-frequency digital signals in modern electronic devices, noise suppression at these frequencies has a high priority. Ceramic capacitors better meet the requirements for this application, since their impedance at high frequencies is much lower than their tantalum counterparts. When replacing a tantalum capacitor with a ceramic solution, typically only one-fifth of the capacitance suffices to achieve the same noise suppression which correspondingly reduces the price of the component.
Additional important advantages of ceramic capacitors over tantalum components include lower self heating, high capacitance stability over a wide frequency range, higher breakdown voltage and increased reliability. Whats more, unlike tantalum capacitors, ceramic capacitors are not polarized and therefore provide ease of mounting during assembly.
