OREX SEMICONDUCTOR’s new XC9128/XC9129 series of synchrounous step-up DC/DC converters enable the implementation of highly efficient step-up circuits with input voltages as low as 0.8V. Both series of devices are suited for a variety of portable and hand-held applications, e.g., digital audio devices, as well as digital cameras and video cameras.

The XC9128/29 series ICs feature an integrated N-channel FET and P-channel FET, and they can achieve efficiencies of up to 93%. From a 1.8V battery supply, the devices are able to supply a current of 500mA to a 3.3V load. In addition, the 1.2MHz fixed switching frequency helps minimize design space requirements by enabling the use of extremely small inductors and capacitors. Output voltage can be freely set in the range from 1.8 to 5.3V using a reference voltage supply of 0.45V and an external resistor ladder (voltage divider). The rated input voltage range is from 0.8V to 6.0V.

The mode pin enables selection between two control modes: PWM and PFM/PWM (the latter with automatic switching). In the PWM/PFM mode, the XC9128/29 series devices automatically switch from PWM to PFM, to reduce switching losses when load current is low. Alternatively, when load current is high they switch automatically to PWM, which means that high efficiency is achievable over a wide range of load conditions.

The XC9128 series incorporates an AEN (Adaptor Enable) pin, which permits it to also be applied as a fast power supply back-up solution when the IC is used together with additional power sources, for example AC adapters. The AEN pin monitors the external power source and ensures an immediate back-up in the event that the former fails. The XC9128 series also features a Flag Output (FO) pin for monitoring the IC’s operation.

The XC9128/29 series is equipped with a variety of safety features, including overtemperature shutdown and overcurrent protection, as well as a soft-start function that can be set internally (5ms typical). The specified temperature range for both is

-40ºC to +85ºC. The XC9128 series is available in two compact packages, MSOP10 & USP10B, whereas the XC9129 series is offered only in an SOP8.
