It truly is a dilemma! To meet EMC directives, most power supplies require X capacitors to be positioned across the input. However, if the power supply also has a plug-in connector, safety directives require these X capacitors to comply with a maximum discharge time of one second. Unfortunately, meeting this requirement with the help of parallel discharge resistors causes the overall efficiency of the power supply to suffer – particularly during partial-load operation, as the resistors produce a constant power loss.

But not to worry, for there is now an intelligent and simple solution to this dilemma: the CAPZero™ IC from POWER INTEGRATIONS!

CAPZero™ acts as a smart high-voltage switch when placed in series with the discharge resistors on a power supply’s input: When AC voltage is applied, CAPZero™ blocks current flow in the discharge resistors; and, when the AC voltage is disconnected, the IC discharges the X capacitor via the resistors. Since CAPZero™ requires no external bias supply, the IC can be planned for use in any design and implemented as needed (i.e., whenever an increase in efficiency is required). With CAPZero™, designers also have the option of using larger X capacitors to improve EMC without negatively impacting efficiency.
