Super flat electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) for long-life applications!

MURATA is extending its range of flat EDLC’s by way of the powerful DMG Series, designed as backup power supply. These are characterized by particularly high reliability, and provide a service life of five years at a temperature of +70°C. The operating temperature range is from -30°C to +85°C.

The DMG Series units have a housing which, despite highly effective miniaturization, is still extremely tough, and features high dielectric strength and very low effective series resistance (ESR). This means that in the single-cell version (2.1V) these capacitors have a rated capacitance of 700mF at a structure height of only 1.4mm, and an ESR of 70m? @ 1kHz, while the double-cell format (4.2V) at a thickness of just 2.8mm, features 350mF and an ESR of 130m? @ 1kHz.

An active-carbon technology provides the basis for the innovation on which the powerful and efficient EDLC’s of the DMG Series are based. As a departure from traditional energy storage components, the carbon, which in this case functions as an electrode without chemical reaction, is the key to the longer service life. As well as this, the capacitance is in a direct relationship to the size of the surface of the activated carbon, with the result that the DMG Series provides high capacitance values with small dimensions and small structure height. With dimensions of only 20.5mm x 18.5mm x 1.4mm, this EDLC from MURATA, designed for applications with extended temperature ranges, is the leader in its sector when it comes to compactness.
