Gyro is the designation applied to modules for the measurement of the rates of rotation of rotating bodies. For a long time, optical-based modules were the only systems available for this, but today economical solutions are on offer that are based on MEMS sensors, which consist of silicon structures.
In MEMS gyros, the rates of rotation are determined by the Coriolis effect. Symmetrical structures made of silicon provide for stability and precision. These MEMS sensors function in each case for one axis, and are also provided with the evaluation electronics needed. This in turn means that nowadays modules are fitted with three sensors at once, one for each axial direction. If the module is also supplemented by acceleration sensors for each axis, then the term IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) is used. In most cases, a corresponding digital circuit is also located in the module, and the data is issued to the central computer via a number of interfaces.
