The MLCC Quandary and Possible Alternatives

PANASONIC provides possible alternatives for the MLCC quandary.

PANASONIC Provides Possible Alternatives to MLCC

Beside mobile phones and cars of the latest generation, digital applications like IOT and network structure are also causing a tremendous raise of consumption. The current gap between worldwide available MLCC production volumes and the market demand is in the range of 20-30%.

Alternative technologies allow a significant reduction of the needed capacitors, especially in the case of typical blocking- and filter application.

Polymer Capacitors as a Possible Alternative

The current gap between worldwide available MLCC production volumes and the market demand is in the range of 20-30%. Due to late started investments and the focus on small sizes like 0201 and below, a considerable easing of the situation cannot be expected in the next few years.

Alternative technologies allow a significant reduction of the needed capacitors, especially in the case of typical blocking- and filter application.

With their product portfolio of polymer capacitors PANASONIC provides possible alternatives especially for high capacitive ceramic caps. Depending on application and requirements, different technologies are available.

What Can Be Replaced and How?

The solutions start with a 1:1 replacement from case size 0805. For new designs or upcoming re-designs it may quite make sense to replace several connected MLCCs by one or two polymer caps. This additionally offers not only space saving, but also cost reduction.

Polymer capacitors don´t show a DC-bias effect, which reduces the capacitance significantly with applied voltage. Due to the good frequency characteristics in the higher kHz-range up to 1 MHz they thus are an ideal alternative.
