HomePlug AV/AV2

Distribution of Ethernet data via the household power supply.

Distribution of Ethernet Data Via the Household Power Supply or Or Other Networks

For higher data rate transmission in the area of multiple megabit per second's products according HomePlug AV Standard, come to mind. At good line conditions and with 200 Mbps line data rate a real UDP data rate of 95 Mbps can be achieved. At short lines or at lower attenuation the maximum user data rate typically is limited by the MII interface.

In case even higher data rates are required products according to HomePlug AV2 respectively IEEE1901 Standard are recommended. With 500 Mbps line data rate they are able to achieve up to 250 Mbps UDP data rate. These products usually can be operated with MII or rGMII interface. All products according HomePlug AV / AV2 respectively IEEE1901 Standard transmit data in Ethernet format.

CODICO does offer modules based on HomePlug AV / AV2 / IEEE1901 Standards.

PLC With Higher Data Rates but Shorter Distance

In the widely used standards HomePlug AV respectively IEEE 1901 the Orthogonal Frequency- Division Multiplexing (OFDM) method is being used. With OFDM the user data is split into several data streams with lower data rate. Each of these lower rate data streams are then modulated by a conventional modulation scheme such as Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) with small bandwidth and after the modulation the RF signals are combined. At the end, this method results in a robust transmission system with high data rates. The data rates can be further boost up by increasing the QAM up to 4,096. The signal on the wires is been attenuated strongly by the relatively high frequencies which limits the reach. Reach and achievable user data rate are much dependent on the capacity of the wires.

If HomePlug AV is used on radiating wires (means all wires except coaxial ones), the frequency range is limited to 2 MHz up to 28 MHz. The modulation scheme is dynamically adapted to the line conditions and varies from QPSK up to 1.024 QAM. With that the data rate on the line goes up to 200 Mbps, which results in a user data rate of about 95 Mbps UDP.

If HomePlug AV2 / IEEE 1901 is applied on two radiating wires, the frequency range from to 2 MHz up to 68.5 MHz is used. The modulation scheme is dynamically adapted to the line conditions and varies from QPSK up to 4.096 QAM. With that the data rate on the line goes up to 500 Mbps, which results in a user data rate of about 250 Mbps UDP.

HomePlug AV2 / IEEE 1901 applied on three wires does use the same frequency band like on two wires but deviant from the former 2 transmitters and 2 receivers are integrated into the chip and being used. The modulation scheme is dynamically adapted to the line conditions and varies from QPSK up to 4.096 QAM. With the dual transmit/receive on three wires the data rate goes up to 1,200 Mbps, resulting in a user data rate of about 500 Mbps UDP.
