Efficient amplification of audio signals

Class D Audio amplifiers offer a major advantage: Their efficiency. While with Class A or also Class B audio amplifiers, the transistors operate in the linear range (and therefore not particularly efficiently), with Class D amplifiers (also referred to as digital amplifiers) the signals are conducted to the transistors in a pulsed manner, so that these are either fully conducting or locking. This means that a Class D amplifier can achieve as much as 90% efficiency (as against 20- 50% with Class A and Class B). Since this means less power loss to be dissipated, the Class D topology allows for perceptibly smaller amplifiers to be created, such as for mobile applications. An analog input signal is converted by a suitable process (such as PWM) in the Class D amplifier into a sequence of pulses. These are amplified by the transistors, and then need to be smoothed by means of a low-pass filter. The technique of amplification with the aid of high-frequency pulses can, however, lead to interference with other circuit parts, which means that attention needs to be paid to good filtering as well as an optimized layout.
