Supercapacitors (also referred to as “supercaps” or ultracapacitors) are becoming increasingly important in modern energy supply systems. While conventional energy storage systems such as batteries are primarily designed to store the highest possible amount of energy and traditional capacitors are capable of delivering very high power within a short time, supercapacitors bridge the gap between these two technologies. They combine a comparatively high energy density with an exceptionally high-power density, enabling both rapid charging and discharging processes as well as reliable short-term energy supply.
These properties make supercaps particularly attractive for applications where fast energy pulses, a high number of charge and discharge cycles, and long service life are essential – for example in industrial systems, uninterruptible power supplies, mobility applications, or the integration of renewable energies. In addition, compared to many battery technologies, they are considered more environmentally friendly because they do not rely on rare or difficult-to-recycle materials.
This whitepaper therefore focuses on the technological fundamentals, operating principles, and application possibilities of supercapacitors. Its objective is to provide a better understanding of this key technology and to highlight its advantages and differences compared to conventional energy storage systems.
What You Will Learn in this Whitepaper-Series
PART 1: Fundamentals and Operating Principles of Supercapacitors
The first part of this whitepaper explains the fundamental physical principles and the structure of supercapacitors, particularly electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). It discusses key influencing factors such as electrode surface area and the Helmholtz layer, as well as their significance for achieving high capacitance. In addition, the most important differences compared to batteries are presented, and hybrid supercapacitors are introduced as a combined approach. Finally, this section provides an overview of different design types and their typical fields of application.
PART 2: Selection Criteria and Use Case Concepts of Supercapacitors
In the second part of our whitepaper, we examine the technical aspects and guidelines for the use of supercapacitors (EDLCs – Electric Double Layer Capacitors), provide practical design recommendations, and present typical solution approaches using single cells and modules. In addition, we explain the key advantages of this technology and demonstrate how supercapacitors can contribute to improved efficiency, reliability, and service life across a wide range of applications.
