MPF42791: Battery Fuel-Gauge ICs for Lithium-Ion Batteries
MPS – Measuring State of Charge and Health
The MPF42791 from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) is a high-precision IC for accurate determination of battery state of charge. The device provides comprehensive status information for lithium-ion battery packs with up to 16 cells. In addition to reliably calculating the State of Charge (SoC), the MPF42791 also monitors the State of Health (SoH) of each individual cell.

For accurate state estimation, MPS uses a proprietary mathematical model that considers multiple cell-specific parameters, including open-circuit voltage, diffusion voltage, series resistance, and voltage hysteresis. By combining these factors, the IC achieves significantly more accurate predictions compared to conventional methods. Based on this model, the MPF42791 can not only calculate the remaining runtime but also determine the currently available power of the entire battery pack – even under low or high ambient temperatures.
Custom Programming
The IC is suitable for a wide range of lithium-ion cells. Programming is done custom by MPS, making this solution particularly suitable for products with higher production volumes. The underlying mathematical model leverages MPS’ extensive proprietary database, which contains detailed characterizations of numerous commercially available battery cells. In combination with the MP279x battery monitor, accuracies better than ±2.5% can be achieved across the full temperature range.
