Hybrid-Supercaps from EATON

Hybrid supercaps use both, battery and supercap technology, and thus provide the advantages of both technologies.

Hybrid Supercaps Use Battery and Supercap Technology

For engineers who are faced with the question of whether to use a battery or a supercap, EATON has the solution - hybrid supercaps that use both, battery and supercap technology, and thus provide the advantages of both technologies in one component. The main advantage of EATON's hybrid supercaps is the significantly higher energy density compared to conventional supercaps of up to 8 times, which provides longer back up times. Additionally they have a lower leakage current (about 1/3 of EDLCs) and lower self-discharge.

In practice this means that the hybrid versions will discharge not in weeks (like supercaps), but months only. In comparison with Li-Ion batteries, EATON’s hybrid supercaps provide a longer lifetime, significantly higher load cycles and a wider temperature range. Additionally they don´t have shipping or storage restrictions.

Features of EATON's Hybrid Supercaps

  • Operating voltage: 3.8V
  • Capacitance range: 30F to 220F
  • Size of 220F: 16.5x27mm (a reduction of number of requested cells!)
  • Operating temperature range:
    - HS-series (85°C with voltage de-rating): -15 to +70/85°C
    - HSL-series: -25 to +60°C (HSL-series)

Advantages Compared to Conventional Supercaps

  • High energy density provides longer back up times.
  • Low leakage current provides long life when used with a primary battery.
  • Low self-discharge maintains voltage over long periods with no charge source.
  • High voltage single cell better match to battery voltages.
  • High voltage can require fewer cells to meet system voltage.

Advantages Compared to LI-Ion Batteries

  • Long lifetime: 10 years at 20?C
  • Long cycle life: 500k (HS-series), 250k (HSL-series)
  • Safety: no thermal runaway - short circuit does not cause fire
  • Wider operating temperature range

Further Battery Disadvantages

  • High current recharge shortens lifetime
  • Higher internal resistance limits power
  • Must manage thermal load
  • Require sophisticated battery management system
  • Must be oversized to reach longer lifetimes of over 5 years

Suitable Applications of EATON's Hybrid Supercaps

  • Smart Meters
  • Industrial controls/factory automation
  • Industrial equipment backup power during electricity down for safe shutdown and signaling
  • Medical equipment alarms & battery backup/swap
  • Solar powered asset tracker mounted on containers, train cars, truckloads, agricultural vehicles, construction vehicles, motor boats etc.
  • Emergency lighting
  • Flash memory
  • RAID servers
