CODICO Solutions for ISO 15118-20 EV Charging

CODICO Solutions for ISO 15118-20 EV Charging

Preparation for ISO 15118-20

Starting January 1, 2027, the requirements of ISO 15118-20:2022 will apply to newly installed and refurbished charging stations. This standard regulates communication between electric vehicles (EV) and charging points to ensure improved interoperability, charging safety, and V2G. CODICO is prepared to meet this challenge.

EU Regulation Supporting V2G

The regulation (EU) 2023/1804 and 2025/656 of the European Parliament and of the Council is focussing on publicly accessible as well as on private recharging points for AC and DC. The European Union is actively working on regulations to support and promote bidirectional charging, also known as V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), as part of its broader strategy for integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the energy system.

15 Years of EV and Power Line Communication Expertise

CODICO is proud to highlight the deep expertise of its engineering team in the field of power line communication (PLC) for electric vehicle applications. With over 15 years of hands-on experience, the team has built a strong foundation that has supported customers in developing and launching successful products into the global EV market. The team is now ready to support next generation charging station projects integrating V2G support.

PLC Modules by 8DEVICES and DROPBEATS

CODICO is able to support such design requirements with its portfolio of PLC solutions. Both the proven RED-BEET 2.0 module from 8DEVICES as a PLC bridge and the DROPBEATS DB2605 System-on-Module (SOM) are suitable for this purpose. For projects of a certain scale, support for chip-down designs is also available. All solutions are based on Qualcomm’s latest HomePlug Green PHY PLC chip, the QCA7006AQ.

Evaluation Tools and Software Support

Additionally, various evaluation tools are available from stock for immediate start of PLC integration into existing, re-designed or newly started charging equipment. On top of that our software partners are staying available to support from their side with already in use ISO 15118 stacks to complete the integration.

PLC Hardware: Coupling Transformers & Crystals

CODICO provides a wide variety of suitable PLC Coupling Transformers from ELYTONE, either for EV or EVSE applications. These well-established couplers focus on the very low insertion loss in the range 3-30MHz combined with all necessary features (AEC-Q200, Isolation…) required by the markets.

For PLC applications, a 25MHz crystal unit from TXC (AM series, 3225 package, 25MHz) is available. The crystal is compatible with Qualcomm’s QCA7005 and QCA7006 chips, which require a total frequency tolerance of ±25 ppm. Currently, TXC is the only supplier on the market that meets this ±25 ppm requirement, including 10-year aging.

Power Supply and Protection Components

CODICO also supports the power supply of PLC modules with tested DC/DC designs, as well as the power rail with isolated gate drivers, GaN FETs, and SiC components.
For protection during Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging, we offer specific RCD sensors in various designs compliant with UL2231, EC62752, and IEC62955.

Wireless Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Cellular

To enable wireless internet connection for charging infrastructure, CODICO offers the latest generation of Wi-Fi and cellular module solutions.

  • Wi-Fi: An overview of all Wi-Fi modules from different manufacturers (Qualcomm, 8Devices, Compex, FN-Link, Ampak) can be found on our Wi-Fi support page
  • Cellular: With Cavli Wireless, CODICO provides module solutions based entirely on Qualcomm technology. More information about CAVLI.

Reliable Charging Connections

Additionally, CODICO offers everything needed for a reliable and efficient EV charging connection. The portfolio includes Type-2 charging sockets compliant with IEC 62196-2 and fixed EV charging cables. For secure electrical connections and strain relief, these are custom-equipped with terminal blocks on one end and cable glands on the device side. Direct PCB contacts for reliable high-power transmission are also supported — perfect for customized “cost-down” designs.

Flexible Internal Wiring and Cooling Solutions

Inside the charging station a wide range of flexible internal wiring and board-to-board connection solutions to suit various PCB layouts are provided, including floating options and SMT jumper cables. Lever-type terminal blocks make wire connections smooth, tool-free, and fast. To keep everything running cool, AC and DC fans for effective temperature management in compact housings are also offered.

What Core Conditions Must be Met to Comply With the ISO 15118-20:2022 Standard?

The new EU regulation requires charging stations to meet specific standards for communication between electric vehicles (EV) and charging points. To ensure compliance, it is essential to have a reliable and efficient EV charging connection that meets the following key requirements:

  • Improved interoperability between EVs and charging stations
  • Enhanced charging safety and V2G capabilities
  • Compatibility with Qualcomm’s latest PLC chip, QCA7006AQ
