High Efficiency GaN Flyback Regulator by MPS

The MPXG2100 from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS), part of the new NovoOne family, integrates a range of advanced features designed to deliver maximum safety, highest efficiency, compact size, and extended lifetime in power supply applications. Beside the usage of an integrated GaN HEMT for higher efficiency, it integrates a secondary controller, with integrated ideal diode (100V MOSFET) and safety-compliant feedback.

MPXG2100 Feature Set

The MPXG2100 offers the benefit of both primary-side regulation (PSR) and secondary-side regulation (SSR) by adopting the capacitive isolation technology, which makes the opto-coupler redundant.

Adaptive Zero Voltage Switching

The NovoOne family of ICs employs adaptive Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), combined with a patented synchronous rectifier FET control scheme. This approach significantly enhances the efficiency of flyback converters. In addition, the devices can communicate with a PFC stage, enabling a highly efficient PFC–flyback combination that delivers maximum performance under both full-load and light-load conditions.

Multi‑Mode Operation and Protection Features

The MPXG2100 adopts several operation modes to optimize the overall performance at various operation conditions.

However, the developers at MPS went even further, elevating the NovoOne family to one of the most advanced AC/DC converter IC series on the market. The MPXG2100 not only integrates an X-capacitor bleeder, peak current control, and frequency jittering for improved EMC performance, but also offers a comprehensive set of protection features, including:

  • Short-circuit protection (SCP)
  • VCC over-voltage protection (VCCOVP)
  • Internal brown-in/brown-out detection (B/I, B/O)
  • Current-sense open/short protection (SOP/SSP)
  • Zero-current detection with over- and under-voltage protection

  • Primary independent run timeout protection (PRTP)
  • Secondary run timeout protection (SRTP)

The parts of the NovoOne family are available with GaN switches with RDSON values from 190mOhm to 480mOhm and thus cover a power range from 45W to 200W.
