Optoelectronic is an area of technology that combines the physics of light, in the visible, the infrared or ultraviolet spectral region, with electricity. Optoelectronics convert electrical signals into photon signals and back again.
Any device that operates as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer is named in the group of optoelectronic devices. This include electrically driven light sources such as laser-diodes and LEDs, components for converting light to an electrical current such as solar- and photovoltaic-cells and devices that can electronically control the propagation of light.
Optoelectronic technologies are used in many areas: fiber optic communications, laser systems, remote sensing systems, optical information systems and medical diagnostic systems.
