Dead Front Display for a Modern Product Design

YEEBO uses new materials that enable a dead front display. This allows an elegant and functional product design that designers can use to create innovative visual effects. Dead front displays give devices a modern look and can contribute to a clean aesthetic.

What Is a Dead Front Display?

The term comes from printing technology and refers to symbols that are only visible in particular situations. This is how they draw attention. When a light source is switched on, the symbols that were hidden until then become visible. The idea was to illuminate only those symbols that are relevant at a certain time and thus improve the user interface.

It is not so easy with LC displays. TN displays appear white when switched off. IPS and MVA displays appear dark, but not black. Usual cover glasses have a transparent opening above the active surface of the TFT. The display is more (TN) or less (IPS.MVA) visible even when switched off.

YEEBO are now using a low-transflective front glass, and at the same time a low-transflective OCA film (OCA stands for Optically Clear Adhesive). The latter is used to mount the glass on the display. The display is now invisible. Only if it is active the image becomes visible. To achieve an ideal effect, the display should be a little brighter than normal.

The applications are numerous. We most often find dead front displays in vehicles as warning/info displays, meanwhile also realised with TFT-LCDs. A second major area of application is consumer electronics, where the black panel design is used. With this technology, a display can be "hidden" behind the front panel.
