DC/DC Converter ICs

The Most Efficient Form of Conversion

In modern electronics, ICs are used with the most widely differing internal structure. As a result, to achieve optimum utilization of the structures in one single system, several DC voltages are often needed. The most efficient form of conversion in this case are DC/DC converter ICs.

With the aid of high speed switches (and a flyback diode), a choking coil is periodically either supplied with energy from the input voltage or must deliver energy at the output. The voltage present at the coil output is smoothed by means of a capacitor. In this situation, only the losses of the components themselves are incurred, and heat losses as with in-phase regulators do not occur.

Different Types of DC/DC Converter ICs

DC/DC converter ICs can be divided into step-up, step-down, and in synchronous (with integrated bottom FET) and non-synchronous types (requiring external Z- diodes), in each case with voltage or current regulation. While it was still usual in earlier days to work with switching frequencies in the NF range, nowadays ranges up to 4MHz are used, which allows for smaller coils but also imposes higher demands on the layout.

DC/DC converter ICs are available as fixed-voltage variants as well as variants with adjustable voltages or adjustable current, and as single or multiple regulators. Thanks to the high integration density, extensive safety circuits such as OTP (Over Temperature Protection), OVP (Over Voltage Protection), or OCP (Over Current Protection) are already integrated in the IC. CODICO offers a range of DC/DC converter ICs for input voltages from 0.8 to 100 V, with currents ranging from a few mA up to 25 A.

CODICO offers a range of DC/DC converter ICs for input voltages from 0.8 to 100 V, with currents ranging from a few mA up to 25 A. We are happy to help with the selection of the optimum variants for the particular customer, and to provide support with advice and circuit proposals, as well as evaluation boards. These boards are particularly useful with regard to a high-frequency optimized layout.
