Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED)

They have become an indispensable part of the display market. An OLED is a thin film component made of organic semiconductor materials deposited on a substrate (glass). In the case of small OLED displays, these can be addressed using a passive matrix, whereas larger sizes call for active matrix technology due to the bulk resistance, that is, each pixel is controlled by a separate transistor.

The advantages of OLEDs as compared with conventional LCDs:

  • Higher contrast, since OLEDs do not use backlight
  • Wide viewing angles regardless of viewing direction
  • Very thin design
  • Self-luminous
  • Energy-efficient, since only the illuminated pixels require power
  • Quick reaction times below 1 microsecond, i.e. 1,000 times faster than LCDs (milliseconds)

Among passive matrix OLEDs, further distinctions can be made between segment, character, graphics and full-color types.
